4/ 8 - Cork to Dublin
There's an explanation in tonight's edition that's as obscure as something Frank Muir used to come up with on Call My Bluff. Alice Roberts asks a local expert to define what Ogham is. It's an almost indecipherable form of fifth-century writing found in Ireland that uses notches cut on the edge of an upright stone, she's told. Ah, of course. The Coast team are taking us on a gentle jaunt around the south-eastern corner of Ireland from Cork to Dublin, uncovering all sorts of delights. There are some magical scenes showing the glass blowers of Waterford at work, a hair-raising trip on the coastal railway known as "Brunel's Folly" and a fun re-creation of Robert Mallet's experiment 160 years ago that resulted in the science of seismology. But perhaps best of all is the poignant story of a young Irish priest who was made to disembark at Cobh from a brand-new luxury liner bound for New York. He was furious, but took photos of the vessel's departure anyway. The ship was the Titanic.
